History of Valentine's Day

February 14, better known as Valentine's Day is a distinct day for lovers all around the world. It's a day associated with romance. But just how much do you know about St.Valentine, which is the day named after him?

It is actually not EXACTLY known why 14th Feb is named after him but there are some legends of the history of Valentine's day. It may or may not be true!

Saint Valentine was a priest who held secret marriage ceremonies of soldiers in opposition to Claudius II who had prohibited marriage for young men. The ban on marriage was a great shock for the Romans. But they dared not voice their protest against the mighty emperor.

The kind Valentine also realized the injustice of the decree. He saw the trauma of young lovers who gave up all hopes of being united in marriage. He planned to counter the monarch's orders in secrecy. Whenever lovers thought of marrying, they went to Valentine who met them afterwards in a secret place, and joined them in the sacrament of matrimony. And thus he secretly performed many marriages for young lovers. But such things cannot remain hidden for long.

When is was discovered that Saint Valentine was defying the emperor's decree, he was apprehended by Claudius who, being unable to force the saint to renounce Christianity, ordered that Valentine be clubbed, stoned and then beheaded.

It is also believed that while incarcerated, the saint fell in love with a young woman who visited him during his confinement. This was the blind daughter of Asterius, the jailer. It is said that God enabled Valentine to miraculously restore the girl's sight. Popular belief indicates that Valentine's farewell message to his love contained a closing that has now transcended time: "From Your Valentine."

Valentine is believed to have been executed on February 14, 270 AD.Thus 14th February became a day for all lovers and Valentine became its Patron Saint.

Today, Valentine's Day is one of the major holidays in the U.S. and has become a booming commercial success.

Although, Valentine's Day is not a holiday here in Malaysia, we do celebrate it quite akin to the people in U.S. This year, it seems we have shortage of flowers LOL but I'm sure the guys could be creative =)

Prices of flowers, chocolates, teddy bears and gifts will hike a few days before and on Valentine's Day. That's why people normally book their gifts one month before. Restaurants will also be fully booked with couples. It's actually quite a good day for business *laughs*

So, are you celebrating Valentine's Day??
