A Book For Exhausted Parents

A sample verse: "The cats nestle close to their kittens now. The lambs have laid down with the sheep. You're cozy and warm in your bed, my dear. Please go the fuck to sleep."

Levi Johnston Readies Palin Tell-All

This fall Levi Johnston will release Deer in the Headlights: My Life in Sarah Palin's Crosshairs, a tell-all book of his time with Mama Grizzly.
"I want to tell the truth about my close relationship with the Palins," Johnston, 20, says in a statement released by his publisher. "My sense of Sarah and my perplexing fall from grace – how I feel and what I've learned." Johnston adds: "I'm doing this for me, for my boy Tripp and for the country.
The timing of the book's release should prove amusing, as Palin may be officially launching her 2012 campaign by then.

Castro Street's Gay Bookstore To Close

San Francisco's A Different Light bookstore is said to be going out of business.
The Castro’s A Different Light Bookstore, one of the few remaining LGBT bookstores in the United States, is apparently closing. This comes on the heels of the closure of the Mission's Modern Times, another independent progressive bookstore. “Everything must go” signs were spotted in the store Saturday. Dismantled shelving sat in a pile in the back of the store. Neighborhood chatter is that doors will close for good this spring. A Different Light has been the gathering place for the Bay Area’s gay literati for decades – the company was first established in 1979. Local authors like Armistead Maupin would often pack the store full of eager readers when launching their latest titles.
Washington DC's Lambda Rising closed early last year. Oscar Wilde Books in the West Village and A Different Light's WeHo outlet both closed in 2009. What's left?

Walmart Blocks "Gay" From Book Reviews

JMG reader Mark S. King reports that Walmart's website refused his review of the It Gets Better book until he removed the word "gay." King, who contributed to the book with his openly gay brother, writes us: "My submission was nixed because I used the word 'gay,' which the site explained was 'profanity.' I felt properly chastised and removed the offensive word from my review, which remains 'under review.' The most socially accepted term for my sexuality is profane! I guess uttering 'homosexual' or 'queer' would have produced a total meltdown." King say he's hasn't yet received a response from his complaint to Walmart's corporate office. Visit his personal website for his review as well as an amusing video with his brother.

San Francisco Public Library...dim-witted rude staff annoy! Turf 'em out!

Though San Francisco has a stunning main library - stocked with a raft of precious beautifully-bound books (and comfy environs to relax in) - the experience is often spoiled by overbearing library staff drunk-with-power anxious to exert their limited authority over the patrons.

For example, although tourists and locals alike are invited to avail themselves of computers (at taxpayer's expense) to check e-mail and surf the Internet for a myriad of legitimate reasons (travel info, research materials, etc.), snotty clerks will invariably trot up and rudely make a point of reading the riot act in respect to the rules and regulations (without provocation).

"If someone is waiting, you  have to step aside," one little fart - with stupid written on his forehead - barked at startled guests this afternoon on the fourth floor of the downtown facility.

Duh!

The folks were abiding by the rules and the intrusion was unnecessary!

It's bad enough that library management has deemed it necessary to number the chairs in the waiting area in bold ubiquitous lettering (in case anyone gets confused, folks!) and thought it of dire importance to post a set of juvenile instructions on the wall so that patrons may be able to fathom (!) how to sit in regimented sequence while waiting their turn.

OMG!

Just because these losers in the employ of the Library were obviously toilet-trained too early - and are too dumb to figure things out - doesn't mean to say it is so with intelligent, well-educated individuals, who frequent the facility.

Notwithstanding, it's obvious to any fool who saunters into the "Main" - as Herb Caan referred to it in his daily column in the morning paper for years - that this institute of learning (!) is overstaffed with a gang of lazy lay-abouts bent on picking their noses and scratching their fat asses all-day.

No matter, that the City's budget is straining in these tough economic times, and in need of trimming!

I say, turf out half of these idiots, and make the others toil (rustle up some sweat!) to earn their pay cheques.

Amen!

Staff too lazy & stuck up to assist patrons!

New Book: Germans Invented Gay Rights

According to a coming book by historian Robert Beachy, the genesis of the modern gay rights movement came in 19th century Germany.
Modern conceptions of homosexuality began, ironically, with an anti-sodomy law. When the German empire was unified in 1871, the Imperial Criminal Code included a law prohibiting sexual penetration of one man by another. Questions about what types of activity should fall under the law spurred a sustained public inquiry into the nature of same-sex eroticism and sexuality in general. [snip] This new view of same-sex love was pioneered by German doctors who published early case studies of homosexuals in the 1850s. German psychiatrist Richard von Krafft-Ebing released the first edition of his hugely influential Psychopathia Sexualis in 1886, which included multiple case studies of homosexuals that supported this new position. Through his work, Krafft-Ebing became a vocal opponent of the German anti-sodomy law, stating that homosexuality "should not be viewed as a psychic depravity or even sickness."
Beachy claims the world's first gay rights group, the Wissenschaftlich-humanitäres Komitee (Scientific-Humanitarian Committee) came into being at that time to gather petition signatures to repeal the anti-sodomy law. His book, The German Invention Of Homosexuality, is due out next year.

Arch Homophobe Sally Kern Rides The Waambulance In New Book

Oklahoma state GOP Rep. Sally "Gays Are Worse Than Terrorists" Kern has self-published a book about her horrible treatment at the hands of those awful, awful homofascists. From the Amazon description of The Stoning Of Sally Kern:
In January 2008, the pastor’s wife and former high school teacher gave a speech to a Republican club in Oklahoma City explaining that the founding fathers believed Christian principles would lead to a civilized society, individual self-government, good citizens, the elevation of learning, and a cohesive value system. While explaining the fifth benefit, a cohesive value system, she told of a group of wealthy homosexual activists who threatened the nation’s moral fabric by attempting to unseat seventy conservative politicians who opposed their agenda. Clips from the speech later were posted on YouTube, generating more than 2 million hits and leading to what she describes as a media “stoning.” That didn’t stop her from winning re-election or from continuing her calls for America to return to the conservative principles that made it great. In this book she warns that there is danger ahead if social conservatives don’t preserve the nation’s foundations of morality, truth, and tolerance. She issues a cry for conservatives to stand for their freedom now before they no longer have the right to do so.
Kern's book has already been tagged with some fun labels. Add your own reviews.

Borders To Close 200 Stores

Borders Books will close 200 locations as part of a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filed today. Analysts say today's actions may not save the company.
The filing — which comes 40 years after Borders started as a used bookstore on Ann Arbor's South State Street — gives the chain a chance to reorganize by slashing expensive leases and reducing its debt load, actions that could return the company to profitability. But it also presents the possibility that Borders will fail to identify a sustainable business model over the next several months of the bankruptcy proceedings, an outcome that could lead to its liquidation. Borders, which lost $604.8 million from 2006 to 2009 and another $168.2 million in the first 11 months of 2010, plans to cut about 30 percent of its 640 stores, equal to about 200 locations — a move analysts view as absolutely critical to its survival. The company is losing about $2 million a week on the stores it plans to close, according to court documents. Borders also indicated in bankruptcy documents that it may close an additional 75 to 136 stores based on extenuating circumstances.

My Uncle's Wedding

Just released is My Uncle's Wedding, a new book intended to explain same-sex marriage to kids ages 4-8 who may be invited to attend the ceremony.
"This children's book is the perfect gift for any child who loves a good story and especially children with gay people in their family," said Molly McKay, National Media Director for Marriage Equality USA. "The author approaches the subject of same-sex marriage with a child's sensitivity and sensibility, and the beautiful illustrations are sure to be enjoyed by kids and parents alike." The message in the book is one of love and equality, but it is handled well and without being preachy. The protagonist observes the proceedings with childlike innocence, simply accepting that his two uncles love each other and should celebrate that. It's no different from any other wedding. And at no point does the story feel heavy-handed.
My Uncle's Wedding is now on sale via Amazon and the above link. Get ready for the wingers to start screaming about "indoctrination."

Believe it or not, it's going to be a trilogy. Not by coincidence, the release date is April 15th. Also uncoincidentally, the trailer has been released during CPAC.

Bristol Palin Is Writing Her Memoirs

Teen mother, abstinence proponent, and reality show star Bristol Palin is writing her memoirs at the age of 20. Hey, if Justin Bieber can do it...
The memoir is set to come from William Morrow & Co., a subsidiary of HarperCollins, which published Sarah Palin's first book, "Going Rogue: An American Life" and her second book "America by Heart: Reflections on Family, Faith and Flag." What exactly will be in the memoir is unclear. The listing on Amazon offered few details and Bristol Palin had no comment on her Facebook page, which like her mother, is often used as a public sounding board. The 20-year-old has competed on "Dancing With the Stars" and also works as a spokesperson for The Candies' Foundation, speaking as an advocate for abstinence.
Let's hear your suggested titles for the book.

Borders To File For Bankruptcy

Borders Books is expected to close 150 stores and file for bankruptcy in the next week. Analysts blame the Amazon Kindle, sort of.
Analysts have faulted Borders for being ill equipped to adapt to bookbuyers' migration to digital formats and for having too many stores in an age when many shoppers prefer to buy even paper books on line from retailers like Amazon.com. The chain operates 500 namesake superstores in addition to the smaller Waldenbooks chain. About three-quarter of its superstore leases expire in 2017 and beyond, according to a regulatory filing. Borders is late comer to the ebooks market, a rare source of growth in the publishing world, launching its ebook store eight months after its larger rival, Barnes & Noble Inc, and nearly three years after Amazon.com. Sales at stores open at least a year have plunged in recent years, with overall company sales down 37.3 percent in the last three years.
